Why Is My Skincare Routine Not Working?

Usually, it's one of four things. Here's how to figure out which one.

The most common version of this question arrives after six weeks of diligent use, no visible change, and a mounting suspicion that you've been misled.

You may not have been misled. But something in the system is broken.

The first possibility is product incompatibility. Certain actives work against each other when layered in the same routine window. Vitamin C is oxidized by exposure to certain peptides. Retinol's efficacy is compromised when combined with acids on the same evening. Before you question whether an ingredient works, question whether the way you've assembled your routine is letting it work.

The second possibility is concentration. The skincare industry has a long tradition of including clinically validated ingredients in amounts too small to produce clinically validated effects. An ingredient at 0.1% can technically appear on a label. An ingredient at 2% is where the research begins. This is why reading ingredient labels beyond the top five entries matters more than most consumers know.

The third possibility is timeline mismatch. Retinol requires twelve weeks minimum for visible skin texture improvement. Antioxidants require consistent daily use for cumulative photoprotective effect — you won't see the benefit until the damage they've prevented would have been visible without them. These are not short-term experiments.

The fourth possibility is barrier disruption. If your skin is reactive, sensitized, or showing signs of overexfoliation — persistent redness, stinging with benign products, an uneven texture that worsens with more product — your actives have nowhere to work because your barrier is occupied trying to repair itself. In that case, the move is to strip everything back to a gentle cleanser, a rich moisturizer, and SPF for two to four weeks before reintroducing anything active.

Most routines fail not because the products are wrong but because the system surrounding them is.
